In connection to the revision of the Latvian court system, amendments to the Civil Procedure Law and laws governing Intellectual Property are to be adopted by the Parliament (moving to the second reading in the Parliament). The amendments have changed the intellectual property court starting from 1 January 2015, and determined that the Regional Court of Riga, which currently acts as the first instance court for the IP cases, would become the court of second instance, and court of first instance would become the Vidzeme’s District Court of Riga. Consequently, it should be expected that the judges of the new court, dealing with the IP cases as the first instance, would take additional courses in IP law to ensure the quality of court procedure. Therefore, we may expect the decisions in the cases related to the intellectual property law becoming more professional and comprehensive.
